The meeting will commence with a general professionalism session followed by breakout sessions. At the breakout sessions an accomplished group of industry leaders will present on a broad range of topics of interest including actuarial and IT partnerships, actuarial governance, and evolving regulations.

1:20 - 2:10 pm:  General Session: Professionalism - Do You Really Understand What The ABCD Does?

                   The Actuarial Board for Counseling and Discipline (“ABCD”) was established in the bylaws of the American Academy of Actuaries to assist the members of the five U.S.-based actuarial organizations in conducting themselves in accordance with the recognized standards of ethical and professional conduct. A common misconception exists that the ABCD's mission is solely focused on administering disciplinary action. This session will review the principles of Professionalism within the actuarial community in the U.S., leading to an in-depth discussion of the broad and meaningful role the ABCD plays in all our organizations.

2:10 - 3:00 pm:  General Session: Privacy and Bias Considerations of Predictive Models

                   In the insurance industry, machine learning models are increasingly used to make decisions that affect people's lives. To ensure that the models are fair, they should be audited for bias. The metrics available to evaluate fairness vary by the context in which the model is deployed. In addition, the fields of big data and data analytics are increasingly raising privacy concerns for many, including important issues respecting data sourcing from third parties and “publicly available” sources, de-identification, algorithmic transparency, and the rights of data subjects to control the use of their data. In this session, we will walk through some of the privacy considerations that arise with respect to data sourcing, model design, and transparency.

• PBR: Where Things Stand & Considerations for Modeling

        One year from life PBR insurers have learned some key lessons from their implementations. This discussion will cover some of the finding including audit results, technical considerations, and modelling decisions. 
   
• Model Governance and Validation: Best Practices and Common Pitfalls

        Modeling is the cornerstone of the actuarial profession. As insurance products grow in complexity, actuarial models too become increasingly complex and subsequently prone to errors. In this session, the presenter will go through common model governance frameworks in the life insurance industry, best practices and useful tools in model validation exercises, as well as common pitfalls of existing model risk management structures.
   
• Designing a Digital Insurance Product

        With insurance companies shifting their technology to enable more digital offerings to customers and agents, it raises the question of whether actuaries should change their approach to insurance product design as well. This session will explore how technology centric companies normally design their digital first products and what techniques might apply to a digital insurance offering. The speakers will share their significant experience designing digital first products and how they have worked with actuaries to apply those methods in insurance. At the end of this session, you will be familiar with many techniques of digital product design and how they can be applied in the heavily regulated world of insurance. 

4:40 - 5:40 pm:  Breakout Session 2

• Actuaries & Entrepreneurship

        What would it be like to start your own entrepreneurial venture? This session will discuss unique opportunities and challenges faced when transitioning to an entrepreneurial venture.
   
• US GAAP Long Duration Targeted Improvements

        The new FASB guidance revises key elements of the measurement models and disclosure requirements for long-duration contracts issued by insurers and reinsurers. An arduous journey awaits most insurers to becoming ready for go-live of the new standard. We explore how insurers can set themselves up best for a successful journey and de-risk some of the perils that awaits them on their journey.  In addition, we take a closer look at the enhanced disclosure requirements and associated implications for insurers’ financial reporting processes.

        The IFRS 17 session at ASNY 2019 Spring meeting focuses on delivering a solid understanding of the Standard itself, equipping audience with necessary knowledge and toolkit to better prepare individual company’s IFRS 17 compliance journey. In addition, the session also presents practical consideration and some innovative solution companies are currently considering in their IFRS 17 system implementation.

If you would like to pay by credit card online, please register online.  If you have been a past member, but have not yet paid dues for this year, membership dues must be paid first before you will receive the reduced cost for this event.

For those interested in paying by check or cash, please download the mail-in registration form, and follow the instructions within.  If you are paying for a group of individuals, please use the form and include a listing of all individuals being included in the payment to ensure proper tracking.  The list should include First Name, Last Name, Email, and Company.

Cancellation Policy

• Cancellation of any individual's event registration must be made two (2) weeks or more prior to an event to be eligible for a refund. All requests are subject to $50 service fee to cover administration costs and email must be received prior to the two week deadline. Cancellations made after the two week deadline will not be honored, however, all individuals are allowed to transfer their registration at any time to another individual at their organization at no cost by sending an email to ASNY representatives at the email below. Any transfer should be communicated to ASNY as soon as it is known. 
• ASNY reserves the right to cancel any program if conditions warrant. In the rare event of such cancellation, registration fees will be refunded in full. We are not responsible for any discounted airfares or hotel penalties that an attendee may incur due to cancellation.
