NEWS: Save the Date! ASNY Annual Meeting, November 9
Monday, April 27, 2009
Save the Date! - The 2009 ASNY Annual Meeting will take place on Monday, November 9th at the Marriott Downtown in New York.

One of our keynote speakers is David Walker, the CEO of the recently formed Peter G. Peterson Foundation. This Foundation, to which Peter G. Peterson has committed $1 billion, is dedicated to increasing public awareness of the nature and urgency of key economic challenges threatening America’s future and accelerating action on them. Before joining the Foundation, David Walker was the head of the U.S. Government Accountability Office where he had been outspoken about the need to address these national financial/economic problems. He respects actuaries and looks forward to partnering with us as we become more involved and visible in these areas.

A dialogue on the much discussed matter of insurance regulation will follow David Walker’s presentation. This topic will be approached from both federal and state perspectives, with notable speakers representing the two points of view. Gary Hughes is an EVP and General Counsel for the American Council of Life Insurers and will speak regarding the future of insurance regulation at the federal level. As the ranking Republican on the Senate Insurance Committee, New York State Senator Jim Seward will speak on insurance regulation from the state level.

This analysis of the future of insurance regulation will be complemented by a session regarding current developments in General Purpose Accounting. Marc Siegel’s current role as a member of the Financial Accounting Standards Board puts him in an ideal position to address such matters. Marc Siegel’s long career, including work leading the Accounting Research and Analysis team at RiskMetrics Group, will undoubtedly enhance his ability to share his expertise.

We hope to see you at the meeting!

Structured Judgments and Periodic Payments in New York: A Unique and Complex System for Tort Awards
Thursday, September 24, 2009
In New York, lawmakers have enacted structured judgment laws concerning the nature of periodic payments that will be received by plaintiffs who have won awards in wrongful death and personal injury actions. It is in this regard that actuarial experts in New York are being called upon to provide a new type of expertise for post trial hearings. Through the testimony emanating from both sides of the litigation, the New York courts seek expert opinion on how to distribute a verdict award. This session will benefit insurance company actuaries, consulting actuaries and independent actuaries involved in valuing these obligations and providing expert testimony. Session will include time for questions & answers.

For life and pension actuaries, a case assessment will be presented, with a uniquely illustrated annuity present value determination that ostensibly meets the “accepted actuarial practice” requirement, notwithstanding practical contradictions in its underlying assumptions.

For property casualty actuaries, a demonstration will be made of how the medical lobbies’ efforts in New York have effectively reduced the value of large damages claims in medical malpractice litigation.

All attendees of this session will find relevant subject matter for their own practices, plus open potential career opportunities for the future. Other insurance and legal professionals will also find this session beneficial.
