2010 Actuarial Society of New York Annual Meeting Monday, November 15, 2010 We are very excited to open registration and share the lineup for this year’s meeting. At the general sessions, an accomplished group of industry leaders will present on a broad range of topics of interest to actuaries in all disciplines. The afternoon breakout sessions will feature many choices of more focused topics for life, health and pension actuaries.
Descriptions of the general sessions are provided below.
Healthcare Reform: The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) and its implications on projected Medicare costs
Rick Foster, Chief Actuary, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services
Now that Congress passed the PPACA and the President signed it into law, the access and affordability problems have been solved, and with one stroke of the pen, the die has been cast, and all our budget woes have all been solved, right? Richard Foster will discuss topics such as his office’s analysis of the new legislation, the Medicare Trustees’ report, and the role of an independent actuarial office in the Federal government.
Chief Risk Officer Panel: Managing Risk in Uncertain Times

Life Insurance Industry Outlook: A Rating Agency Perspective

Standard & Poor’s will highlight its outlook for the life insurance sector and key drivers that will impact ratings such as operating performance, capitalization and competitive position. Evolving liability and investment exposures will be a key focus as companies "de-risk" their profiles, while concerns remain on both sides of the balance sheet.
Professionalism Topics
S. Michael McLaughlin, 2010 SOA President, Global Leader, A&IS, Deloitte
The 2010 SOA President will present on professionalism, ethics, plagiarism, malpractice, and litigation matters, from the perspective of the practicing actuary. Practical examples will be given and time will be allowed for questions and answers.

Training Session on Microsoft Outlook Presented by Family Services of Westchester Thursday, August 12, 2010 Most companies and individuals use Microsoft Outlook as their email, contacts, tasks and calendar manager. Many individuals are doing their own scheduling of meetings and managing their day-to-day calendars and this seminar is offered to help individuals effectively manage their time. Here is a great opportunities for all types of individuals, actuaries and non-actuaries, to learn valuable skills.
Sample topics will include learning all aspects of using Microsoft Outlook including, The Outlook Screen, Outlook Bar, The Mail, Your Inbox, The Size of your Inbox, Sorting, New Message, Creating a Personal Folder, Archiving in Outlook, Distribution list, The Calendar, The Calendar, Screen, The Day Icon, Move from Month to Month, The Week Icon, The Month Icon, The Plan a Meeting Icon, Adding an Appointment, Recurring Reminder Private Tentative, Editing an Appointment, Inviting Others to an appointment, Contacts, Editing a Contact, Adding Contacts from the same Company, Locating an Item in the Contacts Folder, Sending a Letter to a Contact, plus other valuable skills in Microsoft Outlook.
Course is designed to help both beginnings and advance/power users of Microsoft Outlook. We encourage actuaries to forward to non-actuaries in their organization.
Independent and unemployed individuals might find beneficial as well since an opportunity to learn valuable computer skills at a very low cost.

NEWS: ST. JOHN’S SCHOOL OF RISK MANAGEMENT, INSURANCE, AND ACTUARIAL SCIENCE ANNOUNCES EXAM PREP COURSES Wednesday, July 21, 2010 The Center for Professional Education (CPE) at St. John’s School of Risk Management, Insurance, and Actuarial Science offers regular exam preparation courses at our campus at 101 Murray Street in lower Manhattan. The Exam Prep Course for Exam FM/2 begins NEXT WEEK, with additional courses (see below) now on the near horizon.
ASNY MEMBERS WILL BE OFFERED A 10% DISCOUNT FOR THESE COURSES, OFF OF THE TUITION AMOUNTS LISTED BELOW.
Exam FM/2 – Financial Mathematics. This exam prep course begins on Thursday, August 26, and runs through October 28. The course starts at 5:30p.m. and ends at 8:30 p.m. at 101 Murray Street, meeting on Thursday evenings. There are a total of 10 sessions. The cost is $1195. We are targeting the December 1st exam date. Our records show the application date for this exam is October 20.
Exam P1 – Probability: This exam prep course begins on Sunday September 19th, and runs through October 17. The course starts at 9:00 a.m. and ends at 4:00 p.m. (5 sessions in total). Total hours are 30 hours. We are targeting the November 16 Exam Date with an application date of October 5. Cost is $1195.
